Bajoc Ergonomic Valve Guides (EVGs)

An innovative valve guide design intended to utilize the current construction of a modern trumpet/cornet piston with a unique, external valve guide concept that generates smooth valve action.  What makes up the Ergonomic Valve Guide (EVG) is:

  • A uniquely designed thermoplastic piece that is fabricated using state-of-the-art 3D printing technology—we call this piece the "dogbone".  It is designed to perfectly fit into the spring barrel and to slot into the designated valve guide tracks—allowing for a coherent yet easy installation.
  • A brass, nickel-plated bottom ring designed to fit over the outside diameter of the spring barrel, which can then slot onto the thermoplastic dogbone piece.
  • A brass, nickel-plated top ring designed to fit in between the top of the spring barrel and the underside of the OEM valve stem while fastening the valve spring to the washer.
  • An efficient yet durable high-carbon steel valve spring that seats in between the top and bottom EVG rings.

The focus of this new valve guide design was to minimize valve disruptions or inefficiencies that were normally initiated on the inside of the pistons’ spring barrels.  These defects are mainly due to OEM valve guides being made of such poor quality materials, resulting in upstroke “catches” or valve “hiccups,” and overall not permitting players to maximize the full capability of their instrument.

The Bájoc Ergonomic Valve Guide (EVG) is a uniquely designed valve guide that utilizes specially designed parts used to fit onto the modern-day trumpet piston spring barrel. Parts include a thermoplastic piece that is fabricated using state-of-the-art 3D printing technology; a brass, nickel-plated bottom ring; and a brass, nickel-plated top ring. The high-carbon steel valve spring fastens to the top and bottom rings which allow for minimal valve disruptions or inefficiencies that normally initiate inside the pistons’ spring barrels. The end result is a valve guide that allows for valve action to be smooth, effortless, and yet highly sufficient in all up and down strokes of the piston.

The Bájoc EVGs were made to

  • Eliminate valve catching issues that take place inside of the spring barrel; and
  • Ensure that the valve is able to move freely and yet quietly* while utilizing the EVGs.

* Quietly is being used as a general term here since each player has a different approach to what “quiet” valve action sounds like.
