Teal, Larry: The Saxophonist's Workbook

The aim of this work is to make available to the serious student of the saxophone a condensed volume of the fundamental procedures so necessary to the development of a fine performer. The format is not designed for a beginning student unless he has had schooling on related instruments, but is intended to supplement the many fine study methods now available.

In order to develop a complete technique encompassing the entire normal range of the instrument, most of the exercises maintain the same pattern in all the different keys. This procedure is a most efficient method of utilizing and becoming adept with the various alternate fingering positions. Emphasis is also focused on the extreme low and high (normal) tones, which are often avoided due to their difficulty. Memorization of these basic studies is encouraged.

The content here is not intended to be studied in the sequence of the sections, but each practice session should include some work in each of the following categories: tone quality and control, intonation, technique, articulation, staccato, etc. These fundamentals have been found most beneficial at the beginning of each practice session, before proceeding to the more musical etudes and solos.
